Jibola Fagbamiye is a Nigerian born artist who was obsessed with bringing the story of Afrobeat founder and political activist Fela Kuti to life in the pages of a graphic novel. After workshopping the idea on his own, he decided he needed some help putting the finishing touches on the project so he contacted his friend Conor McCreery (Kill Shakespeare, The Last Witch). Together they ended up creating Fela-Music is the Weapon (on sale October 7th), a fantastic sequential art biography which offers a full and multilayered look at Kuti’s rise from obscurity to becoming a groundbreaking musician and resistance figure. This week on the Part-Time Fanboy podcast, Kristian chats with Jibola and Conor about how they came to work together, why they thought Fela’s life was worth exploring in the pages of a comic book, and how they ended up creating a book that Kristian thinks is the rare work that transcends the medium of comics.
