A little over five years ago, comic book legend John Byrne started randomly drawing X-Men comic book pages and posting them on his online forum. Without any fanfare or expectation of payment or publication, Byrne began telling his own alternate timeline version of X-Men history. He branched off from the original intended resolution of the Dark Phoenix Saga where Jean Grey survives the merry band of mutants' confrontation with the Shi'ar Imperial Guard. Reaction from the online community was immediate with fans expressing everything from disbelief to unbridled joy. Questions abounded: Why was John Byrne doing this? Was this an official Marvel project? Will this ever be published? Is this even legal???
On this episode of the Part-Time Fanboy podcast Kristian chats with Chris Ryall, the editor responsible for bringing John Byrne together with Marvel editor C. B. Cebulski so that X-Men Elsewhen could be officially be published in print by Abrams ComicArts. Kristian chats with Ryall about the history behind Elsewhen, they speculate on why Byrne even started doing what he did, and how Chris managed to help get a project in print that was never meant to be published in physical form.
