Jason Neulander is a performer, writer, producer, and director. His latest project is a graphic novel update of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson book Treasure Island called Treasure Island Reimagined: Jane Hawkins and the Pirate's Gold. The original novel is a book that is that is very near to his heart as he used to read it to his daughter Scarlett when she was a child. When he began work on his new adaptation, he decided to update the story by making the protagonist a female as a tribute to Scarlett. But his ambition didn't just end with making a comic. He decided to turn his adaptation into a stage show (debuting this Friday at Austin's Historic State Theater) using visual elements from the book projected onto the stage with actors reading the dialogue and performing all of the foley/sound effects for the show...creating a sequential art experience unlike any other. On this episode of the Part-Time Fanboy podcast Kristian talks with Jason about why he felt he needed to make Jim Hawkins into Jane Hawkins, his history of combining comic books with theatrical productions, and his desire to make this latest graphic novel a visual tribute to fifties era EC Comic books.
