David Pepose is a writer whose career took off with the publication of his first comic series Spencer and Locke which imagined a scenario in which Calvin and Hobbes like characters had been raised in a Sin City-like environment. Since then he’s released a second book, Going to the Chapel, has been praised by such fans as Patton Oswalt, and been ranked by Bleeding Cool among one of comicdom’s top 100 powerul people. What happens to the land of OZ when the death of the Wicked Witch of the West leaves a power vacuum as wide as the Yellow Brick Road? Pepose’s new series looks at a world where the denizens of OZ find themselves at war fighting for control of Dorthy’s old stomping grounds. Described by David as “Mad Max meets The Hurt Locker meets The Wizard of OZThe O.Z. looks to have all the makings of a crowdfunded hit. This week Kristian sits down for a chat with David regarding his motivation for finally jumping into the Kickstarter pool, the current state of the comic book industry, and the challenges and thrills behind being in control of every aspect of publishing a comic on his own.
