Dave Dwonch is a writer and artist who has successfully been working the indie comics trenches for years. He started off by illustrating his own comics and then found himself becoming the Creative Director for Action Lab Comics. As much as he enjoyed finding and crafting new talent for Action Lab, he discovered that it wasn’t really fulfilling his need to tell his own stories. He would eventually leave that company to go out and craft his own books once again. He currently has a Kickstarter campaign running for the second chapter of what he has dubbed The Spores Trilogy. Beginning with the graphic novel Prom of the Dead, The Spores Trilogy tells the tale of a group of teenagers faced with a zombie-like plague that is kicked off by malevolent plant-like creatures. The latest chapter, Spores: The Broken Circle, continues following the journey of the young plague survivors as they discover that what started out as an undead pandemic is actually something far more different than what they expected. On this episode of Part-Time Fanboy, Kristian chats with Dave about breaking into indie comics, why guiding the direction for other people’s comics wasn’t necessarily for him, and whether horror comics can actually be scary.
