This week Part-Time Fanboy travels to international shores once again! This time it’s to chat with Norwegian based writer and comic book creator Josef Tzegai Yohannes. Josef is the creator of a comic book known as The Urban Legend! Yohannaes is a creator with roots based in the East African country of Eritrea. Over a decade ago, Josef noticed the fact that there were little to no mainstream black superheroes in popular media…so he created The Urban Legend! The Urban Legend is a street fighting crime fighter whose creation was influenced by seventies and eighties action movies, martial arts icon Bruce Lee, as well as American civil rights pioneers such as Malcolm X and Rosa Parks! Josef didn’t just want The Urban Legend to be any old superhero. He wanted his superhero to be an inspiration to people of color everywhere so he forged partnerships with organizations dedicated to societal change such as The Nobel Peace Center, The Nelson Mandela Foundation, and The Malala Fund to get special editions of his comic used in school curriculum in countries such as Brazil, South Africa, and Norway! On March 9th The Urban Legend makes his wider debut in the American market on the Amazon Kindle/Comixology app! This week Kristian chats with Josef about the creation of his butt kicking social justice superhero, how a creator from Europe came to be inspired by American pop culture, and what his ambitions are for the future of The Urban Legend!
