Ten to thirteen years after the events of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, the Earth has survived a nuclear conflict and Caesar and his ape brethren live peacefully side by side with humans. During the course of the film Caesar becomes restless and goes on a quest to a nearby irradiated cityscape looking for clues into his origins and what the future might hold for his ape settlement. While there, he encounters a band of slowly degenerating humans who decide they need to know where he came from and take what they can from his simian society.
