Evan Dorkin is an indie comic book legend. In the early 90’s he created two of the most originally chaotic characters in independent comics, Milk and Cheese, for Slave Labor Graphics. Milk and Cheese, along with Dorkin’s other outrageously humorous comic Dork!, would transform the way that many a comic fan would look at comics. His work was one of the true bright spots in a decade of comics that would see a glut of X-Men books, Kryptonian deaths, and Spider-Clone sagas that nearly drove many a fan away from comic books altogether. Recently, Mr. Dorkin has been working on Beasts of Burden with Jill Thompson and in the past year he wrapped up his long running short form comic The Eltingville Club in two standalone issues from Dark Horse Comics. Kristian was fortunate enough to be able to chat with Mr. Dorkin about his work and career for two hours! In this first part of the interview, Evan chats about The Eltingville Club and what inspired the comic as well as the nature of fandom obsession. He also talks a bit about his time writing for the Superman animated TV show as well as the nature of the comic book industry in general. So gather ’round true believers and get ready for the first part of a chat with an esteemed member of the comic book making community on this episode of Part-Time Fanboy!
