In 1990 Manga creator Yukito Kishiro began the publication of his epic cyberpunk adventure series, Gunnm. Known as Battle Angel Alita in its English translation, the series would become an underground favorite in the nineties among American comic fans who would be struggling to look for material outside of the convoluted Clone Sagas and Deaths of Supermen that the big two publishers were offering fans at the time. Alita was a series that influenced many a comic, TV show, and movie that came after it and it would eventually attract the attention of none other than James Cameron who used it as the basis for his TV series Dark Angel. Cameron eventually ended up purchasing the movie rights to Battle Angel and would hang onto them for years intending to make a live action adaptation himself. Two weeks ago Cameron’s Alita finally made it to theaters but ended up being directed by auteur action filmmaker Robert Rodriguez. This week on Part-Time Fanboy Kristian sits down to chat about the new movie with his friend Josh Ripley (of Neuroboxing.org). Was Alita worth the wait? Did the mega-team of Cameron and Rodriguez manage to finally make a great film out of a fondly remembered yet obscure comic series? And what’s with the giant eyes? It’s a cybernetic dissection of the manga adaptation that took years to make it to the big screen!
