April 10, 2019 (No Comments) by Kristian

SPOILERS! In 1939 writer Bill Parker and artist C.C. Beck created the character of Captain Marvel in the pages of Whiz Comics # 2. Created to capitalize on the success of the smash hit that was Superman, Captain Marvel would eventually come to eclipse the Man of Steel in popularity and sales almost immediately after his debut. The only thing that was able to stop the good Captain in his tracks was a copyright infringement suit brought on by DC Comics against the company that was publishing his adventures, Fawcett Comics. Eventually DC would purchase the rights to Captain outright and his popularity would wane as the decades wore on until he recaptured children’s imaginations once again with the airing of a children’s television show in the 1970’s.

This past weekend saw Parker and Beck’s creation reimagined once again for the big budget box office. Having endured a series of critical failures and backlash from fans for not embracing the lighter side of their iconic characters DC and Warner Bros. released Shazam! Does Shazam! continue the course correction that DC started making with their Wonder Woman film or does The World’s Mightiest Mortal fail to light the spark of positivity and fun that fans have been craving from DC’s stable of do-gooders? This week Kristian sits down to chat with his friend Yvis Cannavale to discuss the latest DC movie to soar into theaters!
