In the game of Dungeons and Dragons, the Bard is a class that isn’t necessarily everyone’s first pick to play. The Bard isn’t strong like a fighter, or stealthy like a thief, and doesn’t have the mystical abilities of a magic user. In the context of the game, a Bard acts more like a character who offers support to other members of the gaming party. When Matthew Summo and Pete Collins watched the Netflix show called The Witcher, which featured a Bard-type character, they decided that Bards had potential that had yet to be explored. The Bardic Verses is a book (with a fundraising campaign now on Kickstarter) which is the result of their exploration of the lute playing adventurer. Summo and Collins put together a fantasy anthology comic which would feature a Bard’s escapades by paying homage to their favorite comic creators. Each story in their book pays tribute to artists and writers in comics who they love, from Jack Kirby to Frank Miller. On this episode of Part-Time Fanboy Kristian chats with Matthew and Pete about their experiences playing tabletop role-playing games, how they met at their day jobs and discovered a mutual love of comic books, and how they went about making a character who isn’t an aggressive action hero the center of their story.
