Jeremy Dauber is a professor of Jewish literature and American studies at Columbia University. During his youth in the eighties he, like many other kids of his generation, became enthralled with comic books. Professor Dauber’s fascination with comics would begin with his discovery of Claremont and Byrne‘s X-Men run and culminate into co-teaching a University course with none other than Paul Levitz himself! Now Professor Dauber has written a book that investigates the origins and development of one of America’s most important art forms, American Comics: A History. This week Kristian chats with the Professor about his new book and they both have a tip-of-the-iceberg discussion about the historical deep dive that Dauber has taken in his fascinating and comprehensive investigation into how the comic book came to be, how comic books have changed since they were invented over one hundred years ago, and how they have influenced and been influenced by our society!
