In the lore of film history, there is one movie disaster that looms large above all others: The Island of Doctor Moreau. Almost 100 years after the original novel’s publication, indie director Richard Stanley set off to make a film version of the classic H. G. Wells science fiction tale. Little did Stanley know of the challenge that laid ahead of him. Once his vision was about to be implemented the project took on a life of its own and spiraled out of control. Almost thirty years after that doomed production was unleashed onto movie screens filmmaker David Gregory has released a stunning documentary about the film and Kristian and Paul sit down to discuss what went wrong with The Island of Doctor Moreau and what is so brilliantly right about Gregory’s look at one of the biggest cinematic bombs of the 1990’s.
