In 1981 director David Cronenberg released a movie that blew the minds of moviegoers everywhere. Scanners tells the tale of a group of humans who have horrifying psychic powers. In the film there are two factions of individuals, one lead by Dr. Paul Ruth (Patrick McGoohan) a kindly older scientist who wants to help the Scanners control their abilities and use them to help mankind. The other led by Darryl Revok (Michael Ironside), a power mad sociopath bent on using his powers and those of other Scanners to dominate mankind. To many comic book fans this power play may sound familiar. On this episode of the Part-Time Fanboy Podcast, Kristian sits down with PTF regular Yvis Cannivale to discuss the original Scanners movie as well as the direct-to-video sequels (Scanners II: The New Order and Scanners III: The Takeover) that were made almost ten years after the first film. They chat about how Cronenberg’s first film oddly matches the general themes explored in X-Men comics throughout the years, how the oddly inferior sequels tried to continue to build a weird superhero/powered universe of their own, and why the idea of a “Scanners” universe was never explored in other media.
